Breaking into the cosmetics industry has traditionally been extremely challenging. However, with the rise of eCommerce and social media, the landscape is changing faster than ever.
Few people have benefited from this transformation as much as Kylie Jenner. While her enormous social media audience played a major role in her success, that's only one part of the journey.
By the end of this blog , you'll discover the complete story of how Kylie Jenner built a billion-dollar makeup business. You may even find inspiration to explore the growing opportunities that eCommerce offers today. But before we get there, let's begin with some background.
From Reality TV to Business
For many people, Kylie Jenner needs no introduction. She appeared on the reality television show Keeping Up with the Kardashians between the ages of 10 and 15 alongside her family. She also built a successful modeling career and became one of the most followed celebrities on social media, reaching 27 million followers on Twitter and 141 million followers on Instagram.
Kylie used that audience to promote several products, including the Kendall & Kylie Collection with PacSun, a shoe and handbag line for Steve Madden, and hair extensions with Bellami Hair. These collaborations helped her understand the influence of personal branding long before launching her own company.
The Beginning of Kylie Cosmetics
Kylie's journey into the beauty business began in 2013 when, at just 16 years old, she introduced two nail polish shades for Nicole by OPI. The endorsement reportedly earned her $100,000. She later expanded into clothing, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and hair products with her sister Kendall.
In March 2015, Kylie became a brand ambassador for Nip + Fab, followed by the launch of the Kendall + Kylie clothing line with British retailer Topshop. Although these ventures were successful, they eventually led to a much bigger goal. Creating a beauty brand built around her own vision.

Turning an Idea into a Business
Inspired by her childhood insecurities about her lips, Kylie decided to create a lip product that reflected her personal style. Rather than focusing on building a huge company from the start, she concentrated on making a product her followers would genuinely enjoy.
At 17, Kylie partnered with Seed Beauty to develop and manufacture her Lip Kits. She invested $250,000 of her own money to produce the first 15,000 kits, each containing a liquid lipstick and matching lip liner. The response was extraordinary, with all 15,000 units selling out in less than one minute.
Her mother and manager, Kris Jenner, encouraged her to use Shopify to manage online sales, allowing the business to operate efficiently while reaching customers directly.
Building a Billion-Dollar Brand
In February 2016, the business officially became Kylie Cosmetics, and production quickly increased to 500,000 units. During its first year, the company generated $302 million in sales, followed by another $120 million in revenue over the next six months.
One of the biggest reasons behind the company's profitability was its lean business model. Kylie relied heavily on her social media audience instead of expensive advertising campaigns. Production was handled by Seed Beauty, Shopify powered online sales, and the company operated with only seven full-time and five part-time employees. Since Kylie owned 100% of the business, her only major ongoing expense was her mother's 10% management fee.
Growth continued in 2017 with the launch of 30 additional products and pop-up stores in seven Topshop locations across the United States. The following year, an exclusive partnership with Ulta Beauty significantly expanded the brand's retail presence. Within just six weeks of launching in Ulta stores across all 50 states, Kylie Cosmetics generated $54.5 million in sales.
Becoming the Youngest Billionaire
The global beauty industry was worth more than $860 billion in 2018, with around $60 billion coming from the United States alone. Despite being a relatively young company, Kylie Cosmetics secured a notable share of that market, selling approximately $360 million worth of makeup during 2018.
The company was valued at around $900 million, and its revenue continued to grow. In March 2019, Forbes named Kylie Jenner the world's youngest self-made billionaire at the age of 21, surpassing Mark Zuckerberg, who reached billionaire status at 23.
Kylie also looked beyond cosmetics by filing trademarks for Kylie Baby, Kylie Home, and Kylie Hair. She launched Kylie Skin in 2019, signaling plans to expand her brand into new categories.
Lessons from Kylie's Journey
Kylie Jenner's story highlights how personal branding, direct-to-consumer sales, and efficient operations can create enormous business success. Her journey also shows how social media, eCommerce, and a clear product vision can help entrepreneurs build powerful brands in today's digital economy.
Whether someone agrees with the "self-made" label or not, Kylie Cosmetics remains one of the most remarkable business success stories of the modern beauty industry.
