Together, Pavel and Nikolai created Telegram.

Telegram allows users to send messages, photos, videos, documents, and large files. It also offers encrypted chats and privacy-focused features. Unlike many technology companies, Telegram became popular mostly through word of mouth rather than expensive advertising.

Today, it is one of the world's leading messaging platforms.

Challenges Along the Way

Telegram has faced criticism and restrictions in several countries. Some governments argue that encrypted messaging can be misused by criminals or extremist groups.

Durov has consistently argued that protecting the privacy of ordinary users should remain a priority. He believes reducing security for everyone is not the right solution.

The TON Blockchain Project

Durov also introduced the Telegram Open Network (TON), a blockchain project designed to support digital payments and decentralized services. The project attracted billions of dollars in investment before facing legal and regulatory challenges.

Although the original project changed direction, TON technology continues to be developed by the wider community.
